Hodge is the third actor to portray Cross. He first played him in the 1997 film Kiss the Girls and again in the 2001 film sequel Along Came a Spider; and Tyler Perry as the title character in the 2012 film Alex Cross, which bombed at the box office and led Lionsgate to scrap a previously planned sequel, Double Cross. The film begins with the murder of Detective Alex Cross’ (Aldis Hodge) wife Maria (Chauntee Schuler Irving), who is gunned down just moments after leaving a restaurant where she met Alex’s best friend John Sampson (Isaiah Mustafa). The loss devastates Alex and leaves him struggling with the double challenge of grieving his wife and raising two children alone.

The story then jumps forward a year, where we find Alex, still grieving his grief, interrogating a criminal in his signature style in an attempt to extract a confession. The plot takes a darker turn when the murder of Emir Goodspeed shocks Washington’s African-American community. Alex Cross, convinced of the crime, delves deeper into the case and uncovers a chilling pattern. When art enthusiast Shannon Witmer (Eloise Mumford) disappears, Alex is given the opportunity to tighten the noose around the killer.
‘Cross’ stands out not only for its gritty plot but also for its immersive atmosphere that enhances the viewing experience
‘Cross’ is a tense, emotionally charged crime thriller that combines personal loss with a relentless pursuit of justice, while exploring the psychological complexities of the lead detective. The show effectively balances action with touching character development, as Alex Cross becomes more than just a man hunting a killer – he is a father, a husband and a man struggling with the emotional weight of his past. Aldis Hodge brings a commanding physical presence to the role of Alex Cross and settles into the character with ease. His performance shines both in the high-stakes police sequences and in the quieter, more intimate moments with his family, skillfully balancing the two sides of his life.
However, it’s Ryan Eggold’s chilling portrayal of Ed Ramsey, the DC power broker, that really steals the show
The dynamic between Cross and his childhood friend and partner John is one of the show’s highlights – moving, humorous and believable. He strikes the perfect balance between his calm, gentle demeanor with his friends and the menacing, menacing presence he exudes when confronting his victims. At first glance, ‘Cross’ might seem like just another serial killer thriller, but it stands out with elements that set it apart from the typical genre. Alex Cross’s most distinctive trait is his humanity – his dignity and vulnerability make him relatable and grounded.
‘Cross’ is neither groundbreaking nor boring – it does what it sets out to do, providing entertainment
While the series doesn’t break new ground, the dynamic camaraderie between Cross and his colleagues adds a layer of enjoyment to the viewing experience. There are moments where the writers could have delved deeper, especially when the old video of Cross getting back up while punching a man could have been developed further.
