Werner Herzog made this documentary not as a biography, but as a celebration and presentation of the work of a French couple who became famous for their pioneering photography of volcanoes, a dangerous craft that ultimately cost them their lives
It’s pleasantly priceless: we see snippets of their (still stunning) work, along with small, casual shots of the filmmakers themselves, while Herzog offers us a quiet commentary from the perspective of a fan rather than an expert (though of course he knows something of what he’s talking about).
If there is a tragic dimension (they risked it anyway because that’s what they ended up doing), Herzog doesn’t dwell on it
It may sound banal and pedestrian, but the amazing footage will keep you hooked and leave you in awe of those who dared to film it.
